Ines Rau | YouTube, CBS Philly

The Facts —

  • On 18 October, Playboy announced that its Playmate for November 2017 would be Ines Rau, a French transgender woman.
    • A Playmate is a model who appears in the centerfold of Playboy magazine.
  • Rau told Playboy:

“When I was doing this shoot, I was thinking of all those hard days in my childhood. And now everything happening gives me so much joy and happiness. I thought, Am I really going to be a Playmate—me? It’s the most beautiful compliment I’ve ever received. It’s like getting a giant bouquet of roses.”

The Context —

  • Rau has appeared in Playboy before, in the May 2014 issue called “Evolution.” In this edition of the magazine, Rau appeared nude, but in the November 2017 issue Rau will appear semi-nude.
    • About nudity, Rau told Playboy in an interview:

“Nudity shouldn’t be taboo. Nudity means a lot to me, since I went through a transition to get where I want to be.”

  • The November 2017 issue is the first issue to be printed since Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, died on 28 September.
    • Cooper Hefner, Hugh Hefner’s son, told The New York Times that choosing Rau “very much speaks to the brand’s philosophy.” Speaking about his father, Hefner also said, “It’s unbelievable the lack of knowledge people have in understanding what he was trying to accomplish. And that was really to have a conversation about sex that was healthy and bring it out of the closet.”
  • Playboy featured another transgender model in their September 1991 issue, Caroline “Tula” Cossey. Cossey had previously appeared in the magazine in 1981 as part of a shoot promoting the James Bond film Cossey appeared in.
    • Cossey appeared as a model in the magazine, not as a Playmate.
